Atherton Market: New Hours and Grilling Demo

Atherton Market starts their new 5 day a week schedule today. They are now Tue – Sat 9am to 2pm. Read the newsletter below from market manager, Lynn Caldwell for all the details.

What’s happening this week at the Atherton Market?

Consistent hours, cooperative vendors, creative displays and signage!  That is what is new and evolving this week at the Atherton Market.  Beginning today, you don’t have to remember whether we’re open on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning or Tuesday morning and Thursday night…  the market will be open from 9 am until 2 pm on Tuesday through Saturday.  We will also maintain the Tuesday evening hours, so Tuesday hours will be 9 am until 7 pm.  There will also be new signage and familiar friendly faces to direct you TO our location, as well as around it once you get inside.

Our hopes are to become a more regular part of your everyday life, and to use the new hours to provide more education, host more tour groups and field trips, and most of all to make local food and other goods more available and accessible than ever.  We’ll be interested in your feedback, and ideas for how we can better serve you.

Switching gears for a moment, let’s talk politics.  Like it or not, the Democratic National Convention is a scant month away.  And now back to food.  One thing that makes NC famous is the number and variety of barbecue sauces that are being produced here.  Three were chosen to represent our area during the week of the DNC, and one of them is the secret recipe developed by Dan Huntley, a.k.a. Dan the Pig Man.  This Saturday, August 11th, instead of his food truck Dan will be bringing his fancy grill to offer up samples of slow cooked ribs, and he’ll show you how to prepare them yourself.  He’ll also have his BBQ Sauce available for sale, as well as signed copies of his book.  You can get a free copy of his ten tips for better grilling.  Just follow your nose to our front door, right around 10 am.

In vendor news, Simply Local is offering Big Spoon Roasters nut butters – she is the first in the Charlotte area to carry this product that has been in much demand from those who have procured it from stores in the Triangle area.  With school about to begin, these could be a very popular item in school lunches.  Also, figs are emerging at the market, and while several of our farmers have them, SkyeTurtle Designs is bringing figs from her backyard that are definitely the biggest, and she claims they are the best!  Come decide for yourself.

Don’t forget to ask your friends to vote for us in the America’s Favorite Farmers Market contest!  Our farmers deserve the win for North Carolina, if not the USA!

One quick “item wanted” share – Ms. Ann is trying to organize the kids’ area, and would love to have a Lego table with storage underneath.  Anyone got one collecting dust in their attic that they’d like to sell or share?  Email athertonmarket@gmail.com and let’s make a deal.

Ready, set go!  By the time you read this our first day of the new schedule will be underway.  Step right up and bring a friend – they’ll thank you for it, and you’ll be glad you did.

Keeping it fresh and local,
Lynn S. Caldwell
